Profiles and Social Networking Sites
I was just filling out my profile on the beta social networking site Plaxo, and it got me to thinking that less than 2 years ago, I had none of this information on the Internet. I didn't even have a Myspace account. I had always resisted. I did have a blog on Blogger, but I never filled out my profile, I just used my name. No picture, no anything. I would search for my name on Google and nothing would come up relating to myself, and that is how I liked it. Now? I'm trying to get my name out there! You might be asking why I did a 180 degree turnaround. Well It finally hit me, as a new and struggling internet marketer, with no list, I needed to get my name and picture out there to promote myself first, and then my promote products or programs. Also, this makes it easier for old friends and contacts to find me. I have nothing to hide. I'm not a criminal and there are no embarrassing pictures of me on the internet, so why shouldn't I have my name out there? Now I belong to at least 10 social networking sites, and my picture is on all of them, and my profiles are almost the same on all, with a few minor variations. I use the same picture on all of them. The picture I use is a few years old, but I look exactly the same. In July, I got carded for beer 3 different times at 2 stores. Not too shabby for 41! Also, from what I understand, social bookmarking sites are good ways to get traffic to your websites, but I have only seen a slight increase so far, though have not been doing this all that long. I have managed to get my name in the top 20 on Google, finally, after a little battle. I'm up against a few famous Timothy Watson's and it is tough. But using the social networking sites helped a lot. Now, of course, I don't have everything listed on my various profiles, but what I do have in my profile does give people a little understanding about me. I know there are plenty of people who do not want their information out on the Internet, and I understand that. But if you have nothing to hide, I now seem no harm in having some of your information out there. People can find you anyway if they dig hard enough. ----------
